Biography

Preston is a population scientist who applies much of his trade in quantitative research and statistical analysis and modelling. He holds a Masters degree in Population Studies from UKZN. Supplementing his formal education is extensive training in survey design, econometrics and quantitative research methodology and analysis techniques from various national and international institutions. His contribution in government, research institutes, civil society and in academia has informed many policies and interventions over the years. Preston’s work in Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) included the implementation and roll-out of various large-scale surveys including the Quarterly Labour Force Survey and the Citizen Satisfaction Survey. He has in-depth expertise in designing surveys, data collection methodologies and operations, and statistical analysis. Preston’s research interests include employment and labour markets, particularly of youth and marginalised groups.
