Key findings
  • Educational achievement is close to gender-equal in Burkina Faso, but more than half (55%) of women lack formal education altogether – the same rate as for men.
  • Women trail men in control of certain key assets (including mobile phones, motor vehicles, computers, and bank accounts) and in participation in household financial decisions.
  • More than six in 10 Burkinabè (63%) reject the idea that men should be given priority over women in hiring when jobs are scarce.
  • About two-thirds (65%) say women should have the same rights as men to own and inherit land.
  • While 64% of citizens say women in fact enjoy equal opportunities in hiring, only 40% say the same when it comes owning land.
  • Seven in 10 Burkinabè (70%) say women should have the same chance as men of being elected to public office. o But while most citizens (72%) think a woman will gain standing in the community if she runs for office, 60% think she is likely to face criticism or harassment from others in the community.
  • Although more than half (54%) of citizens say the government is doing a “fairly” or “very” good job of promoting gender equality, 72% say the government should increase its efforts to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women.
