Biography

Gerard (Gerry) Salole is an independent consultant, an adjunct professor at the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment at the Wits Business School, and a strategic adviser to the Africa-Europe Foundation. Until July 2020, Salole was chief executive of the European Foundation Centre, a post he held for 15 years. His previous positions include serving as representative at the Ford Foundation’s Southern Africa office, based in Johannesburg, and as director of the Department of Programme Documentation and Communication of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, based in The Hague. He has also worked for Save the Children Federation (USA) in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe and Redd Barna (Norwegian Save the Children), Oxfam UK, and the UNHCR in Ethiopia.

Salole studied social anthropology and African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester (UK). He serves on boards of the Impact Trust (UK and South Africa), the Barilla Centre for Food and Nutrition (Italy), the European Cultural Foundation (Netherlands), the Firelight Foundation (USA), and the Africa Centre for Philanthropy and Social Investment (South Africa).
