Biography

Until July 2020, Dr. Gerard Salole was chief executive of the European Foundation Centre, a post he held for 15 years. His previous positions include serving as representative at the Ford Foundation’s Southern Africa office, based in Johannesburg, and director of the Department of Programme Documentation and Communication of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, based in The Hague. He has also worked for Save the Children Federation (USA) in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe and Redd Barna (Norwegian Save the Children) and Oxfam UK and UNHCR in Ethiopia.

Dr. Salole studied social anthropology and African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester (UK). He currently serves on boards of Impact Trust (UK and South Africa), the Barilla Centre for Food and Nutrition (Italy), the European Cultural Foundation (Netherlands), the Firelight Foundation (USA), and the Africa Centre for Philanthropy and Social Investment (South Africa).
