2024 was one big celebration.
And a lot of hard work.
The work started fast and furious with the launch of Afrobarometer Round 10 (AB R10) surveys in early January. Pushing hard, we closed 2024 with 28 completed country surveys.
In addition, we rolled out 10 phone surveys during the year, including surveys focused on youth issues and on misinformation and digital security, along with a pre- and post-election panel survey in South Africa.
To expand our country coverage, we recruited a National Partner for Chad and are doing the same for Comoros and Guinea-Bissau, along with a Core Partner for the francophone region.
Now to the celebration: 2024 was a year of major milestones for AB. We turned 25 in July and threw ourselves a party; launched AB Founders’ Day (5 July); released our first flagship report, “African insights 2024,” marking the start of an annual series on high-priority topics; and announced the Africa Judicial Independence Fund. Alongside these events, we welcomed four new members of the AB Board of Directors.
Throughout the year, we continued dissemination of Round 9 findings and engagements with key policy and development stakeholders. A new Emerging Scholars Workshop and university outreach strengthened our capacity building programme.
In many ways, 2024 was a unique year for AB (you only turn 25 once), but the hard work part promises to carry over into 2025 as we complete R10 surveys, launch our second “African insights” report, and carry high-quality African research and policy impact into our second quarter-century.

‘Democracy at risk’: First flagship report homes in on core concern
In July 2024 – a quarter-century after launching its first survey – Afrobarometer released its first flagship report.
Strengthening the rule of law:
The Africa Judicial Independence Fund
Afrobarometer has long documented Africans’ frustrations with their legal systems, from corruption and barriers to justice to unequal treatment under the law. In 2024, we took an important step toward solutions by launching the Africa Judicial Independence Fund.
Meet Afrobarometer
Afrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance, and quality of life.
Its work is guided by a vision of a world in which Africa’s development is anchored in the realities and aspirations of its people.
Nine survey rounds in up to 39 countries have been completed since 1999, and Round 10 was launched in January 2024. Afrobarometer’s National Partners conduct face-to-face interviews in the language of the respondent’s choice.
From the board chair
I’m not sure I have a favourite “AB year,” but 2024 has to rank up there. The way the year brought together Afrobarometer’s past, present, and future was nothing short of exhilarating, and on a personal level, deeply satisfying.
From the CEO
After nearly four years as CEO of Afrobarometer, a period marked by remarkable progress in many areas of our work, I continue to struggle with the imposter phenomenon. But a year like 2024 will do wonders for that.
Board of Directors
IAC
The International Advisory Council (IAC) consists of global high-level political and thought leaders committed to providing strategic intelligence, foresight, and advocacy to support and promote Afrobarometer internationally.
The Afrobarometer team and network
With a Secretariat in Accra, Ghana, AB also has team members based in Cape Town, Nairobi, and other African and U.S. cities. The AB network consists of 39+ National Partners throughout Africa, along with three regional Core Partners and three Support Units.
Funding partners
Four teams, one mission
From data collection to capacity building, all Afrobarometer teams contribute to the network’s mission to make citizen voice a key pillar of Africa policy and decision making.
Surveys
In 2024, AB expanded its reach and depth to new themes, new countries, new methods, and a new age group (16- and 17-year-olds), all while completing full Round 10 (R10) surveys in 28 countries.
Analysis
The Analysis Unit produced an ever-widening array of analytical outputs to meet the needs of external stakeholders and strengthen AB’s methods and products.
Communications
Refining our digital-first approach, ensuring more timely and strategic dissemination of data, improving internal communications, and feeding our findings into trending discourse boosted AB’s brand visibility across social and traditional media.
Capacity building
Buoyed by its inaugural Emerging Scholars Workshop and the expansion of online and in-person programmes, AB trained data users and analysts across Africa while strengthening the capacities of its own staff and partners.
