September is World Sexual and Reproductive Health Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and highlight the importance of accurate information and evidence in supporting informed decisions about health and relationships. The World Health Organization’s 2026 theme for the month, “Health starts here,” underscores that sexual and reproductive health is fundamental to individual dignity and well-being, and that access to evidence-based information can help people make informed decisions and exercise their rights.
This focus on evidence and informed decision making provides an opportunity for Afrobarometer to bring citizen voices into the SRHR conversation. In Round 10, Afrobarometer introduced a module on SRHR, providing a comprehensive look at women’s autonomy in marriage and childbearing, sexuality education in schools, access to contraception, and abortion.
The findings have since been explored through Afrobarometer’s 38-country Pan-Africa Profile and a publication covering Ouagadougou Partnership countries.
Afrobarometer has developed three publications examining perspectives on SRHR across West and Central Africa, East Africa, and Southern Africa. The publications highlight regional patterns while drawing attention to important similarities and differences between countries and population groups.
This communications plan seeks to broaden awareness and engagement with these regional findings, bringing Afrobarometer’s evidence on SRHR to policy makers, researchers, civil society, the media, and wider audiences.
