- Eight in 10 Zambians (80%) say someone in their family has benefited from the country’s Free Education Policy (Figure 1).
- Nearly three-quarters (72%) of citizens reject the idea of limiting free education to those who cannot afford the costs of schooling (Figure 2). o Likewise, 89% of citizens oppose limiting free education to pre-school and primary levels.
- More than half (55%) of Zambians say it is better to have free primary and secondary education, even if the quality is low, while 38% think it is more important to raise education standards, even if parents have to pay school fees (Figure 3).
- An overwhelming majority (84%) of citizens say the national government is performing “fairly well” or “very well” on meeting educational needs, a far higher level of approval than recorded in 2020 and earlier (Figure 4).
Most Zambians say they have benefited from the government’s Free Education Policy and want the policy to continue covering everyone at pre-school, primary, and secondary levels, the latest Afrobarometer survey shows.
More than half of citizens believe it is better to have free primary and secondary education, even if the quality is low, than to charge school fees in order to raise education standards.
A large majority of Zambians applaud the government’s performance on education.
