Key findings
  • Men are 20 percentage points more likely than women to be employed (57% vs. 37%), while women are more likely than men to be unemployed (23% vs. 19%) (Figure 1).
  • Equal shares of Nigerians “agree” or “strongly agree” (46%) and “disagree” or “strongly disagree” (46%) with the idea that men should be given priority over women in hiring when jobs are scarce (Figure 2).
  • Half (50%) of respondents say women should have the same chance as men to be elected to political office, while nearly half (48%) think men make better leaders (Figure 3).
  • Six in 10 Nigerians (60%) say that women and girls should decide for themselves whether and when they should marry, but fewer than half (47%) think women should decide for themselves when and how many children they want to have (Figure 4).

Half of Nigerians say women deserve the same chance as men of being elected to public office, while a similar proportion believe men make better leaders than women and should be elected, according to findings from the latest Afrobarometer survey.

Citizens are equally likely to support and to oppose favouring men over women when it comes to getting jobs.

Men are significantly more likely than women to report being employed.

Three-fifths of citizens say women and girls should decide for themselves whether and when they should marry, but fewer than half support women’s reproductive autonomy.
