Key findings
  • More than half (55%) of Gambians say the government has demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission. One-third (33%) of citizens disagree (Figure 1).
  • And three-fourths (76%) of citizens say that since the TRRC has completed its work, Gambians should reconcile and move on (Figure 2).
  • However, compared to 2018 and 2021, more Gambians (76%) are calling for perpetrators of crimes and human-rights abuses during Jammeh’s regime to be tried in court (Figure 3).
  • More than half (55%) also think the government should press for Jammeh to be extradited to face prosecution for crimes and human-rights abuses, though this reflects a 6-percentage-point decrease compared to 2021 (61%).

More than half of Gambians say the government has demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), the latest Afrobarometer survey shows.

And a large majority of citizens say Gambians should reconcile and move on now that the TRRC has completed its work.

At the same time, the majority calling for the prosecution of perpetrators of crimes and human-rights abuses during President Yahya Jammeh’s regime continues to grow. A slim majority also continue to demand the extradition of Jammeh to face prosecution, though that proportion has weakened.

The government is taking steps to implement TRRC recommendations by collaborating with partners to draft legislation for the establishment of a victims fund and a peace commission.
