Key findings
  • A strong majority (79%) of Gambians say that since the TRRC has completed its work, the country should reconcile and move on. Support for reconciliation has increased by 3 percentage points since 2022 (76%) (Figure 1).
  • But calls for prosecuting those accused of crimes and human-rights abuses under Jammeh’s regime also continue to rise, from 68% in 2018 to 78% in 2024 (Figure 2)
  • Fewer than half (45%) of Gambians think the government has shown a strong commitment to implementing the TRRC’s recommendations, a notable decline from 55% in 2022 (Figure 3).
  • Support for extraditing former President Jammeh has increased by 6 percentage points since 2022, from 55% to 61% (Figure 4).

A growing majority of Gambians advocate national reconciliation and healing as the  country moves forward following the conclusion of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations  Commission (TRRC), the latest Afrobarometer survey shows.

However, calls for the prosecution of those accused of crimes and human-rights abuses  under President Yahya Jammeh’s regime also continue to grow, and support for extraditing  Jammeh from exile in Equatorial Guinea remains strong.

Fewer than half of Gambians feel the government is fully committed to implementing the  TRRC’s recommendations, which include extradition of Jammeh and prosecution of those  accused of abuses during his regime.
