Afrobarometer is pleased to announce that Bruno van Dyk, an international leader in resource mobilization and development, has joined the network as director of engagement.
With oversight responsibilities for fundraising, external relations, and communications, van Dyk will fill a cornerstone position in Afrobarometer’s new structure emphasizing partnership, capacity building, and sustainability.
Van Dyk brings more than 25 years of experience in resource mobilization, university advancement, and international collaboration to the network. During this time, he developed and implemented major university fundraising endeavours in South Africa and the UK, exceeding targets in income and alumni engagement.
Most recently, as a consultant, he served non-profit clients as senior associate consultant with Brakeley UK and Nordic and as senior vice president for the UK and Europe for Grenzebach Glier & Associates. He served a successful 5½-year tenure as director of development and alumni relations for Durham University, UK, and led fundraising and engagement for 15 years as executive director of the UKZN Foundation, South Africa.
A native of South Africa, van Dyk has been an active and committed participant in and advocate for African development. He has served as a primary volunteer in sub-Saharan Africa for the Danish Cultural Institute and the League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers, and as an ordinary member and chair of several university and other non-profit national and international boards. He chaired the Africa Centre for Childhood; the HIV/AIDS Networking Centre; Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education (Southern Africa); and the Institute for Partnerships between Education and Business. He has until recently served on the board of the North American Foundation for the University of Durham and as a commissioner on the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Global Commission on Philanthropy.
He chairs the International Education-Business Partnership Network and CASE Africa and is on the board of Practical Philanthropy across Europe (in partnership with the King Baudouin Foundation-US) and of University World News (Africa). He has extensive experience in Africa, the Gulf States, and Asia-Pacific, and assembled donor funding to establish various major projects in Africa, including the Africa Centre for Population Health, African Centre for Childhood, the African Centre for Crop Improvement, the Centre for African Literary Studies, Centre for Criminal Justice, and the Leadership and Equity Advancement Programme.
For five years he was a teaching fellow with the University of Bologna’s Master’s in International Studies in Philanthropy and Social Innovation program and has contributed to current debates by presenting and facilitating at more than 30 conferences. He has two master’s degrees, in English literature and commerce; a higher diploma in education; a diploma in teaching English as a foreign language; and two certificates in managing partnerships and strategic alliances from INSEAD and in “storytelling for change” from +Acumen, New York.
