Basotho disappointed with elected leaders’ performance

More Basotho approve of their elected leaders than two years ago, but their assessments of government performance are increasingly negative, a new Afrobarometer survey reveals.

While approval ratings of elected leaders have improved, they remain relatively low, and only traditional leaders enjoy approval ratings from more than half of citizens (71%). Public approval of government performance has declined across the board since 2012, with the lowest approval ratings for controlling inflation (13%), ensuring that everyone has enough to eat (18%), narrowing the income gap (18%), and creating jobs (19%).
